Eduardo Rovner

Eduardo Rovner was General Director and Artistic Director of the Teatro Municipal General San Martín in Buenos Aires, Argentina from March 1991 to October 1994. He is founder and director of Espacio magazine.

Rovner's career began in 1976 with Una pareja (A couple) at the Teatro Payró with a production by Manuel Lillo. He the premiered ¿Una foto...? (A photo?) in 1977 directed by Mirta Santos, La máscara (The Mask) in 1978 directed by Alberto Ure, and Ultimo Premio (The Last Prize) directed by Néstor Romero.
In 1983 he entered a competition with Concierto de Aniversario (Birthday Concert) directed by Sergio Renén which was selected to be presented at the Festival de Teatro de la Habana, Cuba in 1984 and at the Teatro Municipal in Lima, Peru. It was also presented at the University of Arizona in 1991, directed by David Foster.

In 1985 Sueños de náufrago (Dreams of a Shipwrecked Man) premiered. Then in 1989, he premiered Y el mundo vendrá (And they will come) directed by Osvaldo Pellettieri which won Rovner a nomination for the Premio María Guerrero as best author.

In 1991 he was awarded Casa de la Américas prize for best Latin American Play with Volvió una noche (She Returned One Night). The Premio Argentores was awarded for Cuarteto (Quartet) which premiered under the direction of Sergio Renén. In September 1992 Lejana tierra mía (My Faraway Land) premiered as well as Carne (Flesh). In September of 1993 Volvió una noche (She Returned One Night) premiered in Montevideo, Uruguay. The play won many awards including the Premio Florencio for best play 1993.

She Returned One Night has done so well in Uruguay and other countries that he resigned his position as director at the Teatro San Martín to devote all his time to his play writing. The play ran in Montevideo for more than three years. It premiered in Buenos Aires in January 1995 and received great reviews. It has also premiered in Finland, Brazil, and Paraguay. This is in addition to a successful run in December, 1993 in Tel Aviv, Israel. Performances of Compañía have been very successful and Volvió una noche won several awards in 1996 for best comedy of the season in Buenos Aires.
