Marco Antonio de la Parra

Biography


Marco Antonio de la Parra, Chilean playwright, short story writer, novelist, and psychiatrist, began to establish his reputation as a writer in 1978 with his play, Lo crudo, lo cocido, lo podrido (The Raw, The Cooked, and The Rotten).  El deseo de cada ciudadana (Every Young Woman's Desire), Infieles (Beds),  King Kong Palace, and Dostoievski va a la Playa (Dostoyevski Goes to the Beach) followed shortly.  El Continente Negro (The Black Continent), Ofelia, La pequeña historia de Chile (The Small History of Chile), Dios ha muerto (God has died), La Tierra Insomne, and Madrid /Sarajevo all premiered a few years later in Santiago to excellent reviews. (Estamos) en el aire (We are on the Air) ran in June 2001 at the Chilean National Theatre and received excellent reviews.  A recent play, Monogamia, was a tremendous success for almost a year in Santiago.  It had its premiere in the U.S. in October 2002 at the Thalía Spanish Theatre in Queens, NY.


In addition to his work in theatre, de la Parra has published books of short stories, Sueños eróticos/Amores imposibles (Erotic Dreams/Impossible Loves) in 1986, Grandes Exitos  (Y otros fracasos) in 1996 and Novelas Enanas in 2001. He has published four novels:  El deseo de toda ciudadana (Every Young Woman's Desire) was published in 1987.  His second novel, La secreta guerra santa de Santiago de Chile (The Secret Holy War of Santiago de Chile) was published by Ediciones Planeta in November 1989 and enjoyed several months as the best selling novel in Chile.  It was published in English by Interlink Books in September 1994.  The third, Cuerpos Prohibidos (Forbidden Bodies), was published in 1991 and La Pérdida del Tiempo (The Waste of Time) appeared in 1994.  In April 1998 Carta Abierta a Chile (Open Letter to Chila) appeared and was on best seller lists for almost a year along with his book of personal memoirs, La Mala Memoria (Bad Memory, 1998).  El año de la ballena (The Year of the Whale), a “Young Adult” novel appeared in 2001 and was Winner of the 2002 White Ravens prize of the Internationale Jugendbibliothek Competition in Munich, Germany  He published another “young adult” novel, El Cuaderno de Mayra in 2002 as well as  a book on his life in Chile, El cuerpo de Chile (The Body of Chile) El Cristo entrando en Bruselas (Christ Entering Brussels) is his latest novel.
